Remote driving

Current consensus

Remote driving is the real-time performance of part or all of the DDT and-or DDT fallback (including, real-time braking, steering, acceleration, and transmission shifting), by a remote driver.

  • A receptive remote fallback-ready user becomes a remote driver when s-he performs the fallback
  • The remote driver performs or completes the OEDR and has the authority to overrule the ADS for purposes of lateral and longitudinal vehicle motion control
  • Remote driving is not driving automation
  • Remote driving of a vehicle by a human is sometimes referred to as “teleoperation.” However, “teleoperation” is not defined consistently in the literature, and thus, to avoid confusion, is not used herein.
